    Julenisse, also called a Nisse - Scandinavia - circa 1800's - Most prominent in Norway and Denmark, the Julenisse is a cousin to Swede's Jultomten. Short in statue and portrayed in a wool suit with a long red hat. He originated as a kindly farmhand. However, he soon showed his naughty side - often playing tricks on the farmers and their families. On Christmas Eve he would leave wooden shoes filled with toys, fruit and candy. For the not so good children's he filled the wooden shoes with sticks and straw.
