Vevay, Indiana, picturesque seat of Switzerland County, was settled in 1801 by French Swiss colonists for the purpose of grape culture for commercial wine-making. The town was named for the home city of Vevey, Switzerland. Wine making, in time, gave way to general agriculture, and Vevay became a busy shipling point, of which little evidence remains today.
Court sessions were held in Vevay before Indiana became a state, and a whipping post was used for violators of the law.
It was the home of Edward Eggleston, author of "The Hoosier Schoolmaster", and has many pioneer homesteads rich in historical lore.
